McCutcheon High School celebrates 50 years of Maverick pride

McCutcheon High School is marking a major milestone this year—its 50th anniversary. Since opening its doors in August 1975, McCutcheon has served as a cornerstone of public education in Tippecanoe County, shaping generations of students.

To celebrate this golden anniversary, the school is inviting the public to a day of reflection, connection and celebration on Saturday, June 7. The festivities begin with an open house from 10 am to 2 pm, where alumni, families and community members are encouraged to tour the school, see what’s changed, and relive memories with classmates, educators and friends.

The celebration continues that evening with a special concert at 7 pm in the McCutcheon auditorium, featuring musical talent with McCutcheon ties. Performers include Michael Kelsey, Bruce Barker, Scott Greeson, Victor Lee, Black Heart Gypsy, Levi Hession, Jake Rowe, Tyrone Hunter and Scott Royer. Concert tickets can be purchased online or at the door.

This milestone honors the generations of students, staff and families who have helped shape McCutcheon’s story. Over five decades, McCutcheon has had five principals: Joe Pickard, Harold Resler, Medarda Bauer, John Beeker, and Gloria Grigsby. Each brought their own vision and leadership to the school, helping to build the Maverick legacy.

The school’s facilities also tell the story of its people. The gymnasium is named for longtime principal Harold Resler. The Media Center bears the name of Joe Pickard, McCutcheon’s first principal. The auditorium honors English teacher Dan Kinsey.

For retired TSC educator Sarah Powley, the anniversary highlights the lasting impact of the school.

“A 50th anniversary celebration is as much a celebration of our students, our educators and our community as it is of the school itself,” Powley says. “What a great opportunity this is to affirm the importance and the impact of public education—and to have fun. To see old friends, greet former teachers, and hear amazing music performed by MHS alumni.”
